'70s and '80s night...
in aid of the Completion and Extension Fund for the Rumphi School, in the African republic of Malawi. On a visit there in 2008, Patrick Oldham and Mark Jones witnessed first hand the efforts of a handful of local teachers providing education for over 500 children, despite very limited facilities. The children - many of them orphans - are so keen to learn they travel up to ten miles a day in a harsh environment in order to attend. Charity workers founded the school in the early '80s, but it was left unfinished and is just a shell with no windows, doors or toilets and no tables or chairs. Students sit on a concrete floor, space permitting; or in the shade of a tree. Patrick and Mark - builders by trade with over 40 years experience - have now taken up the challenge of completing - and extending - the school. They are self-funding all transport and living costs. All money raised will be used for building materials and facilities, however funds permitting, they are also hoping to buy mosquito nets helping to protect against the spread of malaria

Abbie's Day - family fun day raising funds and awareness...
for Leukaemia Research & CLIC Sargent - a charity which cares for children with cancer. Abbie is a seven-year-old girl who lives in Denton. Last September, she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). It's so rare that only a handful of young children in the UK suffer from it - and sufferers can only be treated by trial and error until a cure is found. An appeal is going out to local businesses to make a small donation or give a raffle prize to help raise much-needed funds for the two charities on the day...

The Pink & Purple Ball - for Cancer Research UK
An elegant black-tie event - on a pink and purple theme, with a three-course Indian meal, live music and entertainment, auction and raffle. Bharti Ramji of Ashton is hosting the charity ball - it's part of a series of fundraising activities dedicated to her mother who died of ovarian cancer 20 years ago. Bharti has pledged to raise £50,000 (£1,000 for every year that her mother was alive) - supported by her family and friends who help to organise various events throughout the year. They are appealing for donations for the fundraising auction which will take place during the evening. They have already received a signed football from Manchester United, but more items are needed - which could include collectibles, memorabilia, limousine rides, designer clothes, restaurant meals, beauty treatments and so on. Any other ideas would be most welcome...

Great Manchester Run
The annual 10k race, which takes place in May, attracts nearly as many runners as the London Marathon. All the places allocated by the race organisers have already sold out for this year - but the UK children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent still has a number of guaranteed places available. Ten families every day are told that their child has cancer. CLIC Sargent are the only organisation to offer them all round care and support - but they rely entirely on the generosity of their supporters throughout the country. Join the CLIC Sargent team - and you will receive a fundraising pack and exclusive running vest - and access to the official training 'hub'. Research by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has shown that young drivers aged 17 to 26 are the most 'at risk' of accidents behind the wheel - but because of financial pressures, very few in this age group sign up for the IAM's Skill for Life courses. Now help is at hand - thanks to leading accident management specialists Easi-Drive, who have pledged their support to fund 20 young drivers who would like to improve their skills on the road. Easi-Drive have joined forces with the IAM & Stockport Advanced Motorists. Places on the course - which normally costs £139 - are now available on a first come, first served basis.
